25 May 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser page 5

Maquoketa, Iowa, May 25--Mr. Z. P. Holcomb, once a resident here, died this month at Coleridge, Neb. at the ripe age of 91. He was the father of Z. M. Holcomb of this place and Thos. J. Holcomb of Kansas. Herman Holcomb of Denver, Col., who visited his father and brother here for a few days, has gone to Rock Island on business.

Zachariah P. Holcomb was born Oct. 19, 1826, in Loraine county, Ohio. At maturity he married and removed to the big timber of the Black Swamps where unaided and alone he cleared forty acres in two years. At the breaking out of the Civil war, he was the first man to volunteer in Co. A. 57th infantry, serving till released by his brother, Cyrus L., who substituted for him, sending him home to his sick family. Before the close of the war Mr. Holcomb removed to Iowa and bought a farm near Fulton where he lived and wrought for the best years of his life. Later he lived in the city of Maquoketa and for several years was engaged in the stock business. The last years of his life were spent on his farm with his youngest son, Hollis N., near Coleridge, Neb., where he died May 14, 1917, at the ripe old age of over 90 years.

Mr. Holcomb was the father of twelve children, five of whom survive him: Zelotes M., late of this city, Thos. J. of Independence, Kans., and Hollis N. of Coleridge, Neb., also two daughters by his second marriage, Myrtle and Hattie of Central, Neb.

Mr. Holcomb was an active force for good in whatever place he lived, having builded (at mostly his own expense) the first church in Fulton, Ia., where he preached for years. Of him it can be truly said "He hath wrought long and well."
