25 May 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser page 8

Bellevue, Iowa, May 25 - It was with great surprise and grief that the news of Allen P. Buttler's death was received Sunday and deep sympathy is expressed for the afflicted family, this being the third death in the family in eight months. His father died at that time. Soon after Allen and his wife left for Sheboygan, where he had secured employment. A little daughter was born to them about Christmas time in a hospital, but was taken from them by death when two weeks old. The mother was in the hospital in a serious condition for weeks and had not been at home but a brief while when Allen began having trouble with his throat, but nothing serious was thought of it. He wrote a letter home Friday and did not even mention it or an operation, so it was indeed a great shock to receive a message saying he was very low and another in a very short time saying he had passed away. A hemorrhage which he had not the strength to stand was the immediate cause. He was born in Bellevue twenty-five years ago last January and was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Buttler. The other son, Ray, was run down while clamming and drowned six years ago. Allen had lived all his life here until last fall. He graduated from the high school class of 1911 after he went to the university of Iowa City where he specialized in chemistry and formed a partnership with his father, for the making of artificial ice. He married Miss Otillie Schmaidt of Sheboggan, Wis., a year ago last August. She with her brother-in-law, who went there for that purpose accompanied the body to Bellevue Monday and it was taken to Mr. Strausers' home on North Front street. He was a member of the Presbyterian church from which place the funeral was held Wednesday and was largely attended. The Masons conducted the services at the grave in the cemetery south of town. The floral offerings were beautiful and spoke in a mute way of the high esteem in which deceased was held.

He leaves besides his wife, his mother and three sisters, Mrs. Pete Hipschen of Marcus, Iowa, Mrs. Joe Strausser to whose home he was taken and Miss Mildred at home with the mother.
