Maquoketa, Iowa, July 24--Mrs. J. C. Smith passed away Sunday at noon at her home. She had been a sufferer for many weary months, notwithstanding the loving care bestowed on her. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the East Maple street residence and will be in charge of Rev. Boomershine, of the Reformed church.

Amanda Fowler was born in Jackson county, Ohio, in 1843. In 1859 she was married at DeWitt, Iowa, to James C. Smith. Shortly after their marriage they came to this city and have since made their home here.

Mrs. Smith was a noble woman, and commanded the greatest of respect from her friends.

She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. Charles Patten of Pierre, S.D.; Mrs. Lottie Hancock of Hettinger, N. L.; Leslie Smith of Seattle; Gordon of Garretson, S.D.; Bert of Wilmer, Minn.; Ross of Jamestown, N.D.; Mrs. Ether Searnes of Minneapolis, Minn.; Elmer, Louis O. and Miss Etta of this city.

The funeral of the late Mrs. J. C. Smith of Maquoketa was held this afternoon in that city. Deceased was 74 years old and was born in Jackson county, Ohio, in 1843. In 1859 she was united in marriage with J. C. Smith in DeWitt. Mr. Smith and nine sons and daughters survive.
