Maquoketa, Ia., May 7--In the passing away of Peter Stender at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at his home on Emma street, May 5, 1917, Maquoketa loses one of her most highly esteemed citizens.

He was a straightforward, upright man, born in Germany, March 4, 1860, making him 57 years, 2 months and 1 day of age.

Mr. Stender came to America about 8 years ago and settled near Lost Nation, had farmed near Maquoketa several years, but returned to farming near Lost Nation a few years ago, when he was compelled to quit on account of failing health and moved to Maquoketa the first of March. His neighbors and friends speak in the highest terms of the departed.

He leaves to mourn his death, a wife, three sons and three daughters, Henry, William and Carl, Mrs. Otto Nissen of Lost Nation, Mrs. Carl Stender of Oxford Junction and Miss Minnie at home.

He carried $1,000 insurance in the M.W.A. They attended the funeral in a body at 2 o'clock this afternoon, held at the German church. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Maquoketa, Iowa, May 8--Peter Stender's remains were laid to rest Monday afternoon, and were viewed by a very large crowd of relatives and friends. The music by Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Stack was exceedingly sweet and touching, while the prayer and sermon by the German Lutheran preacher, Rev. Veihs was impressive and consoling. The floral offerings were beautiful and many. There was a large line of autos--some from Preston, Delmar, Lost Nation, and Wheatland and other places who came to show their respect for the deceased, and his highly respected family.
