4 May 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser

Preston, Iowa, May 4--One by one the early pioneers of the country cross the silent river never more to return. But the impress of their lives and the strong conviction of their moral worth are never lost, but are left among those who knew them. The solemn event brings to all the surety of death and the brighter world beyond.

John Fuegen has gone to his reward leaving a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his death. He passed away Saturday, April 28, 1917, at 1 o'clock p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Kilburg. Mr. Fuegen had been confined to his bed for the past two months with stomach trouble, which was the cause of his death.

John Fuegen was born in Ireland Nov. 14, 1842, and in the year of 1888 he came to America and settled at Spring Brook. A year later he moved onto the farm now owned by his son, Charles, where he lived for many years. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Anna Rubel, to which happy union 12 children were born, two passing away in childhood.

He leaves to mourn his death five daughters and five sons, as follows: Mrs. John Garad of Parkston, S.D., Mrs. Nick Proost, Beresford, S.D., Mrs. John Sterbenz, Browns, Iowa; Mrs. John Meier, Slabtown, Mrs. John Kilburg, Spragueville, John Fuegen, Jr., Kimball, S.D., Frank Fuegen, Sturgis, S.D., Joseph Fuegen, Lewiston, Mont., Emil Fuegen, of Browns, Ia.; Charles Fuegen, Spring Brook, besides 29 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Spring Brook Catholic church, Father Knapstein officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Spring Brook cemetery. Following were the pall bearers: John Schmidt, John Otton, John Maner, Con Downey and John Reistroffer.
