20 July 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Maquoketa, Ia., July 20--Miss Susan M. Sears passed away Tuesday evening at 11:30 at her home corner second and Quarry streets.

Miss Sears was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Sears and was born in Meredith, N.Y., May 3rd, 1830. She came to Maquoketa in 1847 with her parents, sixty-nine years ago, and older residents declare she was one of the most beautiful girls ever seen. Miss Susan never married. She kept house for her brother George until he died last winter. Those left in this family to which have been connected so closely with Maquoketa all these years, are three nieces and three nephews. Those from abroad who were in attendance at the funeral at the home were Mrs. Mattie Hackley of Bridgewater, N.Y., who has been caring for her aunt and Mrs. Fred Fischer, a niece of Peoria, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. George Sears of Wabasso, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hoffman of Savanna, Ill. and Miss Bernice Fischer of Savanna.

Miss Sears had a brilliant mind and strong individuality. She was a charter member of the Maquoketa Library association here, later the Boardman Library association and always felt a vital interest in it, contributing generously towards it. She always had an ardent sympathy in the crusade against intemperance and actively worked for the cause as long as she was able.

Miss Sears for many years was noted not only for her fine character, brilliant mind, but for her great beauty.

She was out auto riding Sunday, but the heat the past week was very trying and she slipped out of the world with no real malady.
