Maquoketa, Ia., Feb. 23--Last Wednesday the news from Custer City, Okla., that Earl B. Avery, son of Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Avery, of this city, had passed away came like a thunderbolt to his many friends here--it seemed so sudden, although they knew that he was seriously ill. Still, as he had been reported to be on the gain there was a longing hope that he might recover.

Earl Blakely Avery was born at Eden, South Dakota, on February 6, 1882. In 1885 he came with his parents to Union Center, Iowa, where they made their home until 1894. In that year they came to Maquoketa, Iowa, and it was here that he grew to young manhood. He was graduated from the Maquoketa high school in 1902 and during the following three years attended the universities at Valparaiso and at Lafayette, Ind. In his Junior year at Purdue University, he was threatened with typhoid fever and was unable to return to his work at the university.

After his illness, he went south and located at Custer City, Okla. He was married on March 14, 1907, to Miss Louise Douglas and on a farm near Custer City they have made their home.

Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his death four children: Alonzo Douglas, Florence Catherine, Marion Louise and Margaret Imogene; also his parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. F. Avery, one sister, Miss Anne of this city, and one brother, Elroy, who is attending college at Iowa City.

The remains arrived here at noon Saturday, accompanied by the heart-broken wife and four little ones, and were taken to the home of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Avery, where the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. I. A. Bartholomew of the M.E. church officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
