5 February 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Maquoketa, Ia., Feb. 5.--Mrs. Gordon Ellis passed away at her home in this city Wednesday evening, Feb. 2nd, at 6 o'clock and in her passing Maquoketa mourns another noble woman. Mrs. Ellis counted her joys among the environs of her home, and enumerated her greatest pleasures when in companionship with her family. These sterling characteristics cherished and cultivated in her family circle endeared her to a wide circle, who were proud to call her "friend."

For several years Mrs. Ellis had not been enjoying good health, but only the past seven weeks had she been confined to her bed, but with brave Christian fortitude she bore her sufferings, hoping that she might be spared to her loved ones, yet ready to answer the final summons when called. Besides the husband with whom she toiled hand in hand for nearly fifty-six years, and her children, she leaves 13 grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers and one half-brother.

Margaret Livingston, eldest daughter of John F. and Margaret Livingston, was born in Perthshire, Scotland, July 10, 1844, and passed away at her home in this city Wednesday evening, Feb. 2 at six o'clock. At the age of twelve years she came to America, her first home in the newly adopted country, being in Jones county, Iowa. On October 25, 1860 she was united in marriage to Dr. Gideon Ellis, they removing to this city in 1875, since which time they have made their home here.

To this union were born nine children, Mrs. J. B. Ross, Mrs. George E. Dunlap, Dr. J. B. Ellis, Mrs. E. A. Phillips, Dr. G. C. Ellis, all of this city, and Mrs. J. R. Finton, deceased; Mrs. Geo. E. Mattison, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Robert L. Ellis, deceased, one child passing away in infancy.

Mrs. Mattison was unable to be present at the funeral of her mother.

The funeral was held from the late home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Arthur M. Lewis officiating. Several vocal selections were rendered by Mrs. G. C. and Mrs. J. B. Ellis, daughters-in-law of the deceased. Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
