7 February 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Maquoketa, Iowa, Feb. 7.--Jake Bowman, known to his friends as "Uncle Jake," one of the most highly esteemed pioneer citizens, passed away at the home of his son, Charles, on West Platt street, at four o'clock this morning, aged 89 years, 3 months and 2 days. The cause of his death was a stroke of paralysis, which he received Saturday night. Mr. Bowman came here in 1849 from Virginia, returning to that state in 1851, later coming back with his father's family to Bellevue, where he lived for a short time, and then moved to Andrew. Soon after this he returned to Virginia, where he was married, and came back with his young bride and located near Maquoketa, where he made his home ever since. His wife was laid to rest a number of years ago.

The deceased will be missed by old and young, as he had a very sunny disposition and was always glad to meet his friends.

He leaves to mourn his death three brothers and one sister, S. H. and Ben Bowman of Maquoketa and W. M. Bowman of California. Also ten grand-children.
