VENERABLE WOMAN DEAD.

Mrs. Catherine Mahoney Passes Away at Ripe Old Age

Mrs. Catherine Theresa Mahoney, one of the very early settlers of Jackson county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Stanton in Washington Township, Jones county, at 12:40 Friday morning, January 29th.

Mrs. Mahoney whoso maiden name was Catherine Theresa O'Brien was born in county Kerry, Ireland, July 4, 1829. She came to the United States when a young girl and settled at La Salle, Ill., where in 1848 she was married to Michael Mahoney, and in 1850 they came to Butler township, Jackson county, Iowa, and resided there until thirteen years ago when she went to live with her daughter and family. Her husband died in June, 1896.

Mrs. Mahoney was the ideal type of Christian motherhood and she was revered and loved by all who knew her. The surviving children are as follows: Mrs. Jerry Crowley, Mrs. James Crowley, and John Mahoney, of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Wm. Stanton, of Washington township.
Her children who preceded her in death were Mrs. Mary McDermott, Thomas Mahoney, and Katherine, who was Sister Mary Militina.

The funeral services were held at St. Patrick's church, Garryowen, Sunday, at 10 o'clock a. m., Rev. P. J. Coffey officiating. The pallbearers were John Hardeman, Jerry Callahan, Harry Hanson, Daniel Sullivan, John Dunn, and Jerry Dullea.
