BERNARD, Iowa -- George J. Federspiel, 92, of Bernard, died at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Saint Patrick's Church, Garryowen, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke, the Rev. Joseph McDermott, SVD, the Rev. Xavier Dieter, OSCO and Monsignor William Leonard concelebrating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 21, 1916, in Bernard, son of John and Mary (Wilmus) Federspiel. He received his education at Garryowen school.

He married Vera McDermott on May 14, 1941, at Saint Patrick's Church, Epworth; she preceded him in death. Together they farmed in the Bernard area throughout their lives.

George loved spending time with his family on the farm. He enjoyed raising cattle and working the land. He was a proud lifelong member of the Bernard community.

Surviving are three children, Loras (Rita) Federspiel, of Bernard, Patti (Rich) Meehan, of Solon, and Tom (Diane) Federspiel, of Bernard; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Driscoll, of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ernie and Joe; and three sisters Louise, Rose and Viola.
