BERNARD, Iowa - Vera J. (McDermott) Federspiel, 88, of 3523 Bernard Road, Bernard, died at 7:34 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where there will be a parish rosary at 7 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1913, in Epworth, daughter of James and Anna (Callahan) McDermott.

She married George J. Federspiel on May 14, 1941, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth. Together with their family, they farmed in the Bernard area.

She touched so many of our lives through her smile, her faith and her love. She was a devoted wife, mom and grandma, and will be sadly missed.

Surviving are her husband, George; two sons, Loras (Rita) and Tom (Diane), both of Bernard; a daughter, Patti (Rich) Meehan, of Iowa City; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Bertha McDermott, Rose Horsfield and Mary Driscoll.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold and Clarence; and a sister, Mary Speltz.

A Vera Federspiel Memorial Fund has been established.
