Germaine E. Bechen, 84, of 10184 267th St., Bernard, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at 9:18 p.m. at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Friends and relatives may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial: St. Patrick's Cemetery, Garryowen.

Germaine was born May 28, 1923, in Bernard, Iowa, daughter of John G. and Ella (Moorman) Kurt. She received her education in the Jackson County rural schools. On Oct. 11, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harlan Bechen at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Garryowen. Germaine did in-home health care for many individuals in the Bernard area. She was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Garryowen.

She is survived by one daughter, Sister Linda Bechen of Dubuque; one son, Dennis Bechen of Henderson, Ky.; two grandsons, Brannon and Adam Bechen; and nine siblings, Charles (Kit) Kurt of Cascade, Lois Donovan of Bernard, Sister Mary Kurt RSM of Oelwein, Sister Bernice Kurt RSM of Cedar Rapids, Rita Martin of Bernard, Earl (Luetta) Kurt and Tom (Rita) Kurt, both of Bernard, Jane Ann (Lloyd) Steffen of Dubuque and Pete (Mary Jane) Kurt of Bernard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harlan Bechen, on Dec. 28, 1977; a granddaughter, Ashleigh Bechen; and two brothers, Dorrance Kurt and Henry Kurt.

A Germaine E. Bechen memorial fund has been established.
