Charles N. Hosch, 77, of 4919 Red Violet Drive, died at 4:56 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Garryowen, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Detachment Marine Corp. League. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on May 1, 1932, in Cascade, Iowa, son of Paul and Marie (McCarthy) Hosch. His family moved to the Bernard area in 1942. He graduated from High School at St. Patrick, Garryowen.

He joined the Marine Corps. in February 1952, doing his boot camp in San Diego and Camp Pendleton, Calif. He served in Korea from December 1952 until March 1954.

He married his sweetheart, Vonda, in May 1963.

He loved to fish, hunt, play cards and travel. He had a great interest in history, especially World War II in Europe. Over the years, he traveled all over the USA and to Germany, France, Ireland, Korea, Japan, a British Isles cruise and a Scandinavian cruise. He was looking forward to going to Mesa, Ariz., this winter.

He was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9663 and past president of the Eagles Club 568. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion 528 of Cascade, the Dubuque Marine Corps. League, New Vienna Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 1st Marine Division Association.

He finished his career as an over-the-road trucker and, therefore, got to see even more of the Unites States.

Surviving are his wife, Vonda, of Dubuque; a daughter, Patricia (Ernie Cancio) Hosch, of Marina Del Ray, Calif.; a sister, Mary (Richard) Prior, of St. Paul, Minn.; three brothers, Loras (Virg) Hosch and Paul Donald (Rosella) Hosch, both of Dubuque, and Wilfred (Shirley) Hosch, of Bernard; a sister-in-law, Janet (Tom) Pins, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Raymond.
