Funeral Wednesday Morning for Former Resident of Bernard

Mrs. Mary Deacon, widow of the late John Deacon, and formerly of Bernard, died Monday morning of this week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Loraine Kleih, 350 Seminary St., Dubuque, la.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from the Devaney Funeral Home to St. Patrick's church, North Garryowen, where the pastor. Rev James Cassidy, offered the Requiem High Mass and delivered the funeral sermon. Present in the sanctuary was the Rev W H. Blessington, assistant pastor of St. Patrick's church, Dubuque. Interment was made in the parish cemetery at North Garryowen; Rev Cassidy, assisted by Rev. Blessington,officiating.

Mary, daughter of the late Patrick and Mary (Roche) Reddin, was born at Bernard December 25, 1879, and was therefore in the 74th year of her age at the time of her demise. Upon completion of her education in St. Patrick's school, Bernard, she was united in Holy Matrimony with John Deacon at St. Patrick's church. The young couple engaged in farming near Bernard and were the parents of seven children, six of whom — five daughters and one son — survive. They are: Mrs. Loraine Kleih, Mrs. James (Florence) McCarthy, Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Sullivan, Mrs. Omar (Helen) Whaley and Mrs. Geraldine Massey, all of Dubuque, and a son, Clarence Deacon, of Bernard.

Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Hannah English, Bernard; a brother, Dan Reddin, of Spearflsh, South Dakota; and 12 grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, a son, and three brothers. Her husband departed this life on September 24, 1944.

Pallbearers were Mike Curtis, Dom and Clem English, Merlin Reddin, Joseph and James Sweeney.
