John Joseph Deacon, born March 1st, 1807, at Washington Mills, la., passed away at his home in Garryowen at 3 P. M., Sunday, September 24th following a lingering illness.

Mr. Deacon moved to his present farm 57 years ago. On January 8, 1894 he married Mary Reddin of Garryowen. He was one of the substantial farmers of Garryowen and when his health permitted, took an active interest in the affairs of his community.

Surviving him are his wife, daughters, Lorraine, Mrs. Louis (Geraldine) Massey, Dubuque, Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Sullivan, Des Moines; Mrs. James (Florence) McCarthy, Dubuque; Helen of Clinton and one son, Clarence, of Bernard. One brother, William, also survives. One son, Leo, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, September 27th, from the family home to St. Patrick’s church at 9:30 with Rev. P. F. Malone, officiating.

Pallbearers were Henry Mahoney, Wm. Collins, John Biggins, Dan McDonnell, Maurice Edwards and John Federspiel.

Funeral arrangements were in charge of Devaney & Sons.

Those from out-of-town present at the funeral were Will Deacon, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sullivan, Des Moines and Henry Deacon and Mary Deacon, Fonda, Iowa.
