Passing of James B. Wise
16 December 1858 to 4 December 1926

James B. Wise, well-known Iowa township citizen, who has been so seriously ill with heart trouble the past month, died at an early hour on Saturday morning, December 4th, at his home about six miles northwest of this city.

James B. Wise was born at Hawley, Pennsylvania, on December 16, 1858, and lacked but twelve days of having attained the age of 68 years. He came to Sabula with his parents when a babe of two years and has spent his entire life in this vicinity, on the farm on which his life’s work ended. He was married to Miss Margaret Simpson, of Savanna, on November 15, 1888, Mrs. Wise passing away on March 27, 1917. Surviving are six children, Roy, of Belden, Nebraska; Ira, Robert and Will, at home; Mrs. Margie Block, of Elvira, and Mrs. Gertrude Russell, of Clinton. One daughter, Miss Edna, passed away in October 1922, and a son James, died in infancy. Mr. Wise also leaves a sister, Miss Martha Wise of Bellingham, Wash., but who was called here by the illness of her brother, and a brother, Will Wise, of Bellingham, Wash.

The passing of Mr. Wise is keenly felt, not only by the family, but by a large circle of friends throughout this section. “Jim” was a man who easily won and securely held friendships. He was honest and industrious in his dealings and occupation and was of a friendly and companionable nature and he will be greatly missed. He was a member of Volunteer Lodge, Knights of Pythias and LaFayette Lodge, I.O.O.F., and also of the D.O.K.K.

Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, with Rev. Elmer E. Shafer, of the Sabula Methodist church, in charge. Hymns were sung by Mrs. Herman Jacobs and Mrs. Frank Bryant. At the grave in Evergreen cemetery, the impressive burial service of the Odd Fellow lodge was carried out. A large number of Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias and many old friends and neighbors were present to pay their respects to the departed.
