Jackson "Sentinal" 6 Feb 1890
"FLEMING—At the home of Jas. T. HAMLEY in this city Thursday, 30 Jan 1890, of abscess of the stomach, J.W. FLEMING, aged 66 years. Deceased was born in Ticonderoga, New York, was married in 1847 and came to Iowa in 1865, engaging in school teaching at once. His ability as an educator was soon recognized by his election to the office of county superintendent. Retiring from this office to farm life his busy mind never ceased to take an active interest in public and political questions. A few years ago his health began to fail him and an autopsy on his remains showed his system to be in a very bad condition. He leaves a devoted wife and daughter, Mrs. J.T. HAMLEY, and two sons, Melvin and Martin. The funeral was held from the Baptish Church, Rev. Langridge [sic] presiding and a large number of friends and neighbors were [sic] present."
