Maquoketa "Excelsior" 1 Feb 1890:
"J.W. FLEMING after much suffering, died at his home in this city at 5 o'clock Thursday morning of cancer of the stomach. Deceased was age 66 years. He was well known in this county and section of the state. He was for many years a successful school teacher and filled the office of County Superintendent of schools very acceptably. He was for years a prominent institute worker and was the author of several educational treatises. For several years he has been a prominent leader in labor matters. He was a loved capable conscientious man. The funeral will be held at the Baptist church tomorrow morning at 10:30 conducted by Rev. R.J. Landryde [sic]."
