Roush---Lavina Liston was born in Perry county, Ohio, February 24, 1833. She came to Iowa in 1851, and located near the Esgate school house. She was married December 12, 1855, to Elijah Roush with whom she lived over 45 years in happy wedlock. She was the happy mother of four children, three sons and one daughter---Hiram, who died some eight years ago, Isaiah who died at two years of age, and one son who died in infancy, while only one daughter, Mrs. Ariann Turner, and also four grand children survive to mourn the loss of a kind loving mother and grandma. She spent all of her married life in the Esgate community except the two years she and her husband lived in Maquoketa, where he died on May 30, 1901. She made a profession of religion in young womanhood and united with the M. E. church. She was a kind woman and neighbor and a fine wife and mother. All who knew her loved and admired her. Her work is done and she has gone to her reward. She was in her usual health on Tuesday morning but was striken with paralysis and never regained consciousness. Funeral services were held at the Esgate school house at 10 a. m. Thursday and burial was made in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
