Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa
Wednesday, December 25, 1912
Grant.--Mary E. Chandler was born at St. John's, Canada, August 6, 1822, and passed peacefully away at 6 a. m., Sunday, December 22, 1912, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Tubbs, on South Olive street, this city. She was the daughter of General and Mrs. Samuel Chandler and came with her parents to Jackson County, Iowa, from Michigan in 1845, making the journey of two weeks overland in wagons. The following year, Dec. 17, 1846, she was united in marriage to William C. Grant, a native of New York state, whom she met in Michigan and who also came west to the new state of Iowa to make his future home. He passed away April 15th, 1884. She was the mother of eight children, the eldest, Samuel C. dying about eight years ago. Those surviving are: Mrs. Emily Tubbs, Mrs. S. J. Tubbs of this city, Mrs. H. S. Ewers of LeMars, Iowa, Rob't. G., Joseph L., William P., and Lee of this city.

Mother Grant was a noble woman, generous, kind and considerate to all and was always happiest when seated in her home with her children about her. She cared not for the world, her home ties were sufficient happiness for her. She was reared in the Methodist religious faith and adhered strictly to the doctrines of that church. Always mind ful of others, she forgot self in her 90 odd years of useful ministrations to neighbors and friends. She has seen her old acquaintances fall by the wayside all around her and now, she too has gone to her reward.
