Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa
Thursday, February 26, 1914

John L. Smola was born in Maquoketa, Iowa, July 15, 1860, and died at his home on Quarry St. Feb. 19, 1914.

Peerless Lodge No. 60, Knights of Pythias, took charge of the services at the house and together with the Jackson Lodge No. 33 of Odd Fellows, marched to Mt. Hope cemetery where the latter conducted the services at the grave. The Modern Woodmen and D. O. K. K. also turned out in a body, Mr. Smola being a member of these orders.

He was united in marriage to Miss Anna B. Seda in 1883. To this happy union seven children were born, four of whom survive him namely: Lenna of Platteville, Wis., Lawrence, Zoa and Ruth of this city. Besides his wife and children he leaves his mother, one brother and four sisters, Wm. F. Smola of this city, Mrs. E. Z. Sostheim of Chicago, Mrs. Minnie Miller and Mrs. Ed. Tubbs of Maquoketa, and Mrs. H. E. Strawbridge of Findlay, Ohio, to mourn the loss of a most affectionate husband, indulgent father and beloved son and brother.

Mr. Smola leaves a host of friends who will sorely miss the ever ready smile and cheerful word he always had for everyone with whom he came in contact. He bore his suffering bravely and when death came he fully realized his condition and met it with the same brave spirit that was so characteristic of him.
