Obituary

Thomas J. Houston was born in Lincoln county, Ohio, Dec. 2, 1839. He came to Iowa at the age of 9 years and located at Emeline, Iowa, in which place he has since resided.

He was united in marriage to Sarah C. DeMoss Feb. 18, 1866, to which union were born eight children, five of whom are left to mourn his demise. His wife preceded him in going 32 years, having passed away July 12, 1886.

He enlisted in service in the Civil war, Sept. 11, 1862, and after serving nearly three years was mustered out June 5, 1865.

Besides the relatives, he leaves a host of friends who mourn his going. He was always found to be a kind and loving father and good neighbor. Broken is the band but firm remains our memory.

In order to accomodate the many friends, it was necessary to hold the services in the Emeline church and the feeling of the community were evidenced in the lareg assemblage and the remarkably respectful consideration shown by them.

In accordance with Mr. Houston's ligious preference, a Christian Science service was held, Mrs. D. B. Marlowe having charge of the services and Mrs. G. C. Ellis singing by request "No Night There."

A goodly representation of the G. A. R.'s attended in a body and J. W. Ellis presided in their burial service at the cemetery.
