John W. Burkey was born in Elhart, Indiana, on May 6, 1851. In the fall of 1854, he came with his parents to Iowa, where they settled on a farm near Iron Hill, while this part of the state was yet new and little more than a wilderness. As a young man he shared the hardship and toil incident to the settling of a new timber country.

Mr. Burkey was married on October 4, 1870 to Miss Martha Morehead of Iron Hill. To them one child was born, who is now Mrs. George Turner of this city. For a number of years she has lived near her parents and their companionship and helpfulness have been mutual.

With the exception of two years spent in the western part of Iowa Mr. and Mrs. Burkey continued to make their home at Iron Hill until they moved to Maquoketa.

He is survived by lifelong companion, his daughter, four brothers--David of Atlantic, Henry of Casey, Ia. Elijah of Onslow, Melvin of Iron Hill, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Sadler of Elliott, and Mrs. Martha Matheney of Maquoketa.

Mr. Burkey suffered for some time from a complication of diseases, but his condition was not ocnsidered serious until a few days ago when pneumonia developed after an attack of influenza. He passed away Tuesday Marhc 16, 1920, in the sixtyninth year of his age.

In 1885 under the preaching and pastorate of Rev. W. C. Thompson Mr. Burkey was converted and joined the Free Methodist Church at Iron Hill. Later he transferred his membership to Maquoketa. The interests of the kingdom of God lay close to his heart, and next to his home he will be missed most from the circle of his Christian friends.

Funeral services were held in the Free Methodist church, Friday afternoon conducted by the pastor who was assisted by Rev. H. A. Dalrymple. The body was laid to rest in Mt. Hope cemetery.
