Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, Tuesday, September 20, 1927
Aged Resident Laid to Rest

Martha Ann Burkey was the elder daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Liston) Morehead, and was born Nov. 16, 1854, on the old homestead near Iron Hill. Here she grew to young womanhood. On October 4, 1870, she was united in marriage to John W. Burkey. To them was born one daughter, Mary Belle, who lovingly cared for her mother through her long illness.

In 1885 under the ministry of Rev. W. C. Thompson, Mrs. Burkey was converted and joined the Free Methodist church at Iron Hill. Later, when the family moved to Maquoketa about 25 years ago she transferred her membership to the church here. Sister Burkey was a faithful, conscientious woman.

Her husband, who passed away in March, 1920, was also converted during the same revival in 1885 and shared her religious convictions. To their Christian friends, especially, the home of Brother and Sister Burkey was a pleasant, attractive, wholesome place.

Devotion was a characteristic of her life--devotion to home, friends and the church she loved so well. She served as president of the Woman's Missionary society and as class leader for many years until failing health compelled her to relinquish her labors.

Less than a year ago, Mrs. Burkey suffered a stroke of paralysis and although not entirely helpless, was confined to her home where she passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 1927, in her 73rd year. Not many mothers in the decline of life have the loving care and affection of such a devoted daughter as was the privilege of Mrs. Burkey.

The funeral service was conducted at the home Monday afternoon by Rev. John Watterson. Rev. C. O. Monroe, the local pastor, and Rev. W. J. Trimble also assisted in the service. The body was laid to rest in Mt. Hope cemetery.
