Maquoketa Record, March 11, 1903

Henry Knittle was born in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 10, 1841, and was therefore in his sixty-second year. He came to Iowa in 1855,and in 1872 was united in marriage to Miss Maria Ingalls of this city. To this union there were born four children who together with their bereaved mother survive to mourn their great loss: Misses Mary and Grace, and B. G. of this city and Dr. E. H. Knittle of Onslow and also surviving brothers and sisters who live in the east. The funeral services occurred at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5th from the home on the corner of Second and Maple streets, conducted by Rev. A. T. Young of St. Mark's Episcopal church, assisted by Rev. George B. Shoemaker of the M. E. church, with interment in the Mt. Hope cemetery. Mr. Knittle was in the mercantile business for forty-eight years and since closing his business has been in the employ of M. Rice and R. R. Cave. He was of a cheerful, happy disposition and had a wide acquaintance with the people of this locality.
