Thomas E. Berkley died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. H. Haight, in Maquoketa, on Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 1903, at 11:50 a.m., after a lingering illness of Bright's disease, in his seventy-seventh year. Mr. Berkley was born in Milton, Vermont, June 11, 1826, and came west in a868, settling in Mt. Carroll, Carroll county, Illinois, and about eighteen years ago came to Maquoketa. On September 4, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Myra Worden, at Lockport, New York, and to this union seven children were born, five now living, namely: Mrs. O. W. Young of Chicago, Thomas H., Charles H., Mrs. Jas. Arnold and Mrs. Chas. H. Haight, all of Maquoketa, were at their fathers bedside to the end. He also has one brother living at Clear Lake, Iowa and two sisters survive him, one in Minneapolis and one in Chicago. His wife preceded him to the grave some seven years ago. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Samuel Shepherd officiating, and interment was made at Mt. Hope cemetery. Mr. Berkley was a kindly disposed man and strictly upright in his dealings with fellow man. His occupation was a carriage and wagon maker.
