The late John Nagel, sr., was born in Denmark on April 13, 1833, and died at the home of his son, John Nagel, jr., northwest of Sabula, Io., on September 3, 1910, at the age of 77 years, four months, and 20 days. He came with his family from Denmark in 1852, landing at New Orleans and thence coming up the Mississippi by steamer to Sabula, arriving here in 1854, and this locality has since been his home.

When the war broke out he became imbued with the patriotic spirit of the times, and going to Savanna on August 7, 1862, enlisted in the 92nd Illinois. He served throughout the remainder of the war with honor and valor. He was honorably discharged June 21, 1865, and returning to the farm spent his years in bringing his land up to a high state of fertility, and following the peaceful pursuits of a farmer. He was twice married and of three children born, but one survives the father, John, jr., who is farming on the homestead. Both of Mr. Nagel's wives have preceded him to the grave. He also leaves four grandchildren, 1 brother, Wm. Nagel, of Sabula, and a sister Mrs. Gieblestein, of Clinton.

Mr. Nagel was a man of kind heart and many noble traits of character. In his intercourse with neighbors and friends he was found to possess that same loyalty which called him to the front in the bloody days of '61 and '65. For over two years he was unconscious of his surroundings, and in his instance death was but a relief from earthly cares, and the great mystery of the future life became to him no longer an enigma.

He was laid to rest by old army comrades of Chauncey Lawrence Post, G.A.R., in Evergreen cemetery, on Wednesday, Sept. 7th, Rev. Brackett delivering the funeral sermon.

Source: unknown, a scanned clipping was found. Throughout the article the name was misspelled as 'Nagle', which has been corrected in the transcription.
