HANGS HIMSELF IN CITY BASTILE
Dead Body of Chas. Schaper Found Hanging From Bed Tuesday
When the city marshal opened the jail on Tuesday morning he was shocked to find the dead body of Chas. Schaper hanging by a belt from an iron cot.
Early Sunday morning night watchman Wohlers arrested Schaper as he was alighting from a train with two gallons of hootch in his possession. After confiscating the liquor he was ordered to appear before Mayor Houck on Monday morning. He could not be located on Monday, but that evening he appeared armed with a revolver at the home of a sister in North Bellevue, and it is said, made threats against the life of the night watchman. His niece very cleverly succeeded in getting possession of the gun and went for assistance. He was taken into custody after considerable struggle and placed in the jail where he ended his life by fastening his belt around his neck and to the end of the cot and then rolling to the floor.
Dr. J.C. Dennison, acting as coroner, impaneled a jury consisting of F.H. Entringer, Wm. Oberman Sr., and John DeGear. After hearing the evidence, a verdict of suicide by hanging was returned.
It is fortunate, indeed, that the man who was evidently temporarily insane, did not do serious injury to one or more before subdued.
Deceased who was the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Schaper was born in September, 1870 on the homestead nine miles west of Bellevue. He has made this vicinity his home continuously following the carpenter trade.
He is survived by four brothers and seven sisters, namely: Tony, Henry and Mrs. George Winters of Lakota, Iowa; Mrs. Urs Rehard, Des Moines; Mrs. W.B. Cannon, Chicago; Mrs. J.B. Cromwell, Hanover; Mrs. Wm. Jones, Spokane, Wash.; George, Will, Mrs. Chas. Stuart and Mrs. Fred Goetz of Bellevue.
Deceased was a member of the Savanna Lodge No. 164, I.O.O.F. under whose auspices the funeral services were conducted this afternoon at two o'clock from the Engelken Undertaking Parlors. Interment was made in the family lot in the Lutheran cemetery.
