George August Schaper, 73, who has been a resident of Bellevue for the past 50 years passed peacefully into his eternal rest at 1:10 p. m. Tuesday, June 20, at Bellevue Memorial Hospital where he had been taken early Saturday morning after suffering a severe stroke at his home west State street early that morning.
Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon, June 22, from the Dye Funeral Home where services were conducted at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Laurence Nelson, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and burial was made in the Presbyterian cemetery. Pallbearers were Ned Fratus, Tony F. Till, John Abeln, Art Achen, Ed Holzhammer and A. J. Manderscheld.
George Schaper was born at LaMotte, Iowa, on March 6, 1877, a son of Henry and Elizabeth Ernst Schaper. He received his education in the public schools of LaMotte and vicinity and lived on a farm with his parents until 1900, when on April 18 of that year he and Miss Katherine Ernst of Bellevue were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents. With the exception of a few years spent in Dubuque, the home was made in Bellevue, where he followed the trade of carpenter and truck driver until his eyesight compelled him to retire.
He is survived by his faithful wife, two brothers, Henry of Bricelyn, Minn., and Tony of Lakota, Ia., and five sisters, Mrs. George (Lizzie) Winters, Algona; Mrs. Erso (Sarah) Rehard, Des Moines; Mrs. Bernard (Lucy) Cromwell, Savanna, Ill.; Mrs. Charles (Marie) Stuart, Bellevue; and Mrs. Wm. (Ida) Cannon, Chicago. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Charles and Henry and one sister, Mrs. Fred (Minnie) Goetz.
Mr. Schaper, who had the respect of all who knew him was a very capable carpenter. There was no limit to his generosity to his friends or anyone needing help and he would do anything within his power to be of assistance.
