W.E. Schaper, 70, A Suicide, Buried Here Saturday.
Body found Wednesday Afternoon in His Home.
Funeral services for William E. Schaper, 70, who took his own life in the kitchen of his home in the Maier building on the corner of Second and Market streets, last Wednesday afternoon, were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Dye Funeral Home. The Rev. S.H. Sandrock officiated and pallbearers were Mike Sommers, John Goepfert, Edmund Ernst, S.S. Remakel, George Dieckman and Elmer Lundin. Burial was made in the Lutheran cemetery.
Mr. Schaper, who was well known in this community, shot himself in the mouth with a 12-gauge single barrel sawed-off shotgun and the body was discovered about 3 p.m. by Ned Fratus of Dubuque who called to see Mr. Schaper on business matters. Mr. Fratus called to the Rev. Laurence Nelson who was passing on the other side of the street and they notified officers. The body was reclining in a chair with the shotgun lying on the floor where it was dropped by nerveless hands. Death had been instantaneous. County Coroner John J. Tilton of Maquoketa was called and deemed it unnecessary to hold an inquest as it was a clear case of suicide.
William E. Schaper was born on a farm near Lamotte July 4, 1872, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schaper. He married Miss Wilhelmina Dieckman. Mr. Schaper was a carpenter, a trade he followed until a few years ago when his eyesight failed, and he built many houses and other buildings in Bellevue and vicinity.
Survivors are three brothers, George of Bellevue, Tony of Lakota and Henry of Minnesota; six sisters, Mrs. Charles Stuart of Bellevue, Mrs. Etta Jones of Washington, D.C., Mrs. George Winters of Lakota, Mrs. Sarah Rehart and Mrs. W.E. Cannon of Chicago, Ill.
