Lester Edwin Roeder, age 90, of Spragueville, Iowa, died Sunday, November 8, 2009 at the Maquoketa Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at St. John the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston, Iowa. Reverend Greg Geier will officiate. Burial will be in the Spragueville Cemetery with Military Honors given by the Spragueville American Legion. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 10 at St. John the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston, and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. A memorial fund has established in Lester's name.

Lester was born February 22, 1919 in Springbrook, Iowa, the son of Theodere and Olivia (Weinschenk) Roeder. He attended rural Jackson County Schools, then served in the US Army from 1941 to 1944 during World War II. On September 23, 1946, Lester married Vernelda Jackson.

Lester and Vernelda farmed near Preston until moving to Spragueville in 1993. He enjoyed dairy farming and farming in general, especially soil conservation. His hobbies included cutting wood, dancing and cards. Lester was a member of St. John the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston and the Spragueville American Legion Post #590.

Lester will be dearly missed by his wife, Vernelda of Spragueville and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Olivia Roeder; five brothers, Oliver, Harold "Harry", Eldred, Roland and Lyle, and four sisters, Iola Dammon, Ardith Kieffer, Vivian Welsch and Donna Koppes.
