BRYANT - Gilbert Henry Moeller, 81, of rural Bryant, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, Iowa.
Visitation will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston, Iowa, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, and an hour before the funeral service on Tuesday. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston, with the Rev. Paul Lippstock celebrating. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery with full military rites. Casket bearers will be Leon Moeller, Robert Moeller, Richard Peasley, Lynn Taylor, David Hoffman and Ron Bormann. Honorary casket bearers will be Andrew, Garrett and David Moeller. The Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, is assisting the family.
He was born Dec. 30, 1927, to Fred and Lillie (Aude) Moeller in rural Miles. He was a 1945 graduate of Miles High School. Upon graduation, he worked on the family farm until he was drafted in June 1945. He served in the United States Army Air Corps near the end of World War II where he obtained the rank of Corporal working as a classified mail clerk. He was stationed at Buckley Field in Aurora, Colo.; Lackland Field in San Antonio, Texas; and Mather Field in Sacramento, Calif. After his tour of duty, he returned home to work at DuPont in Clinton and later worked on the family farm in rural Miles. He married Betty Jean Scheckel on August 27, 1955, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston.
The couple farmed south of Miles in Clinton County, where he received several awards and honors for his soil conservation efforts. He was a Deep Creek Township trustee for several years. He also served on the first board of education at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston and was president of the band boosters at East Central High School, Miles, during the time the couple's four children were enrolled in school instrumental music programs. For several years he was employed as a crop adjustor for Federal Crop Insurance. He also worked in the maintenance department at the Alverno Health Care Facility, retiring after 15 years of service. Among the proudest moments in his life was to witness the college graduations of each of his four children. In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren's academic, sports and 4-H events. He was a member of the Spencer-Cook American Legion Post 677 in Miles, where he served as the Post Commander; St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston; Great River Threshers in Miles; the Knights of Columbus Preston Council 11222 and the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty Jean of Bryant; two sons, Warren (Michelle) of rural Miles and William (Donna) of Christchurch, New Zealand; two daughters, Wanda of Hibbing, Minn., and Wileen (Robert) Gehrig of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; five grandchildren, Erin and Garrett Moeller of rural Miles; and Andrew, Katherine and David Moeller of Christchurch, New Zealand; a special nephew, Leon (Paula) Moeller of rural Preston; two sisters, Jeanette Schepler of Clinton and Lucille Schroeder of DeWitt; a brother, Lester (Alice) of Preston.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Lee, in infancy. Memorials may be made to Mercy Home Care or Mercy Hospice.
