Deceased Name: WILFRED T. HERRIG

Wilfred T. "Jim" Herrig, 87, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 804 Kane St., died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the care center.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on March 16, 1914, on his parents' farm near La Motte, Iowa, son of John and Mary (Thielen) Herrig. He married Florence Hoxmeier on Nov. 18, 1946, in Plymouth Rock, Iowa.

He had a great love for farming and spent the years before World War II working on his father's farm. All of his life he pursued gardening as a hobby and was famous for his beautiful flowers and inviting tomatoes. Jim inspired that same love for growing plants in his children and grandchildren.

When World War II exploded, he was on the first troop ship headed toward Europe. He served in the Army in Ireland, Algeria, Sicily and Italy as an ambulance driver and medical corpsman.

After the war, Jim spent many years as a Master Barber at Jim's North End Barber Shop, 2660 Central Ave. He was generous with his time in volunteering to cut the hair of children at St. Mary's Home, as well as shut-ins.

Jim instilled a love for baseball in his children, organizing neighborhood games every night after dinner. He instilled the fundamentals, sportsmanship and served as permanent pitcher and umpire. He loved to drive kids to Cubs, Braves and Hawkeye games.

He spent many happy days fishing and hunting with his son, Jim, and his friend, John, enjoying the forests and fields of Iowa, along with his two dogs, Smokie and Duke.

Singing was a wonderful pastime for him and he lead many family sing-a-longs and belonged to the Dubuque Barbershop Singers Chorus.

He was a very self-motivated reader and learner and inspired a love for learning in his children. His grandchildren became the center of his life after he retired; he was a much loved grandpa.

Surviving are a son, Jim (Mary Schrieber) Herrig, of Dubuque; a daughter, Dianne (Art) Roche, of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth M. (Marc) Roche-Gratama, Katherine R. Roche and Andrew M. Roche and Adam, Collin, Brendan and Whitney Herrig; three brothers, Albert Herrig, of La Motte, Iowa, and Ed (Donna) Herrig and William "Bill" (Joan) Herrig, both of Dubuque; two sisters, Elvina "Bin" Hoxmeier, of Dubuque, and Lucille McAndrew, of Bernard, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Marie Herrig and Thelma Herrig; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Norbert, Arthur, Julien "Jukes" and Arnold Herrig; and two sisters, Ermina Koch and Hilda Koch.

A Wilfred T. Herrig Memorial Fund has been established.
