MERCEDES HERRIG
Mercedes M. Herrig, 89 of 306 N. 7th St. Bellevue, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday June 14, 2010 surrounded by the love of her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, June 18, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellevue.
Burial was in the Parish Cemetery.
Visitation for Mercedes was held from 3 – 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue and again Friday morning after 9:30 until procession to the church.
She was born on Aug. 17, 1920 in Bellevue, daughter of William & Anna (Haxmeier) Lampe. She married Alvin J. Herrig on Oct. 8, 1940. The couple farmed in the Bellevue/Springbrook area for 36 years until they moved to Bellevue in 1976. After 59 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on March 15, 1999.
She was a member of St. Peter & Paul Church, Springbrook and also St. Joseph's in Bellevue. She was actively involved in the Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America. Her faith was a very important part of her life.
Caring for her family was truly her passion. She was a very gentle soul and generous person who always found the best in everyone, never being judgmental. Her home was always open to her grandchildren and even her grandchildren's friends, who thought of her as a second grandmother.
She took pleasure in sewing for her children, taking care of her gardens and flowers, cooking and baking for her family. She was referred to as Nana Great or my "Little Grandma" by her great-grandchildren.She is survived by 8 children: Ronald (Rebecca), Carol (Brent) Postel, Vickie (Raymond) McCarthy and John (Sally) of Dubuque; Mary Kay (Steve) Gibbs, Joan (Marty) Jess of Bellevue; Marge (Pete) Hau of Johnson Creek, WI , and Jess (Paula) of Bellevue; her grandchildren Kem (Steve) Holmes, R.J. (Sundra) Herrig, Natalie (Paul) Stamer, Grant and Kyle Campbell, Bryan Postel, Kristin (Steve) Clark, Steve (Tina) Postel, Todd McCarthy, Tina (Eric) Wilkinson, Mia (Jon) Marshall, Jauna (Chris) Kerf, John Herrig, Nicole (Kyle) Pfeiffer, Stefanie (Travis) Templeton, Louis and Julian Jess, Adam, Marissa and Justin Herrig; 28 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 3 brothers, Richard (Velma), Larry (Marietta) and Norb (Linda) Lampe and 3 sisters, Helen Daugherty, Mary Sturm and Marcella "Babe" Junk.
She was preceded in death by three grandchildren; Melissa McCarthy, Lindsay Gibbs and Erika Marsh and a great-granddaughter, Addison Pfeiffer.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from Hospice of Dubuque and Home Instead of Jackson County for their kindness, care and concern for Mercedes during her short illness as well as those that kept her family close to their hearts during this difficult time. Memorials will be given to Hospice of Dubuque and Bellevue Ambulance.
