Deceased Name: ALVIN J. HERRIG

BELLEVUE, Iowa - Alvin J. Herrig, 87, of 306 N. 7th St., Bellevue, died Monday morning, March 15, 1999, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Kingery Funeral Home, Bellevue, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1911, in Bellevue, son of John M. and Mary Ellen (Horan) Herrig.

He married Mercedes Lampe on Oct. 8, 1940, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue. They farmed near Bellevue until retiring in 1979.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and its rosary society, the National Farm Organization, and Bellevue Senior Citizens. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He was a steward of the land and enjoyed working the family farm and in later years gardening. His greatest joy was having his grandchildren visit.

Surviving are his wife, Mercedes; three sons, Ronald J. (friend Marilyn), of Dubuque, John W. (Sally), of Dubuque, and Jesse J. (Paula), of Bellevue; five daughters, Carol L. (Brent) Postel, of Dubuque, Victoria A. (Raymond) McCarthy, of Monterrey, Mexico, Mary Kay (Stephen) Gibbs, of Bellevue, Joan M. (Marty) Jess, of Bellevue, and Margery A. (Pete) Hau, of Watertown, Wis.; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Birdella Herrig and Coletta Polhemus, both of Moline, Ill.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melissa McCarthy; two sisters, Leola Hoffmann and Ila Scheckel; and a brother, Wilbur Herrig.
