Cletus W. Herrig

Cletus W. Herrig, 88, of 1577 Delhi St., died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011, with his family at his side.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 6:30 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1923, in St. Donatus, Iowa, son of Mathias and Agnes (Pollock) Herrig. He married Ida Roling on Oct. 4, 1955, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, Iowa; she preceded him in death on Dec. 17, 1996.

Cletus served in the Army during World War II, in Europe, and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He served with the 119th Infantry Regiment Company G and was highly decorated with numerous honors, including the Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in combat. He also received five Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.

After his service to his country, he attended Barber College and for over 50 years he owned and operated the Delhi Barber Shop, in Dubuque. He also was the proud owner of his farm in Saint Donatus where he raised Black Angus cattle.

Cletus and Ida also were foster parents to many children and served as a host family to foreign exchange students from Loras College. "Clete," as he was called, was a longtime sponsor and player on the Delhi Barber Shop "Hair Raisers" bowling team. He served as a Scout leader and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 510, the American Legion Post 6, Nativity Parish and the Dubuque Business Men's Association.
Cletus enjoyed each person he encountered and every day he lived. He was a great listener and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Surviving are his children, Rachel (Dana) Jenson, of Waterloo, Iowa, Ned (Susan) Herrig, of Dubuque, Beth (Vince) Volz, of Gallatin, Tenn., Regina Herrig, of Lee's Summit, Mo., Stacia Reddish, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nicholas (Debra) Herrig, of Lenexa, Kan.; 13 grandchildren, Luke and Nicholas Jenson, Julie and Christopher Herrig, Joseph, Noah and Anastacia Volz, Adelaide, Mitchell, Zachary and Cole Reddish and Dylan and Jacob Herrig; a sister, Rosemary Frantzen, of Saint Donatus, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Irene Herrig, Isabelle Stillmunkes and Lucille Merkes, all of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers Roman, Edwin and Julian.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Church of the Nativity, Saint Donatus Catholic Church and Hospice of Dubuque.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sunset Park Place for the wonderful care and kindness they gave to Cletus over the past 3 1/2 years. "We're in good shape now."
