MAQUOKETA, Iowa - John A. "Jimmy" Schmidt, 82, of Maquoketa, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at home, following an extended illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa, with the Rev. James Chappell officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, where military rites will be accorded by the Timber City American Legion Post 75, O'Connor-Regenwether Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3633 of Maquoketa and the Andrew AMVETS Post 62. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where there will be a vigil service at 5:30 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Schmidt farmed in Jackson County from 1948 to 1963.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1922, in Jackson County, son of John and Katherine (Tebbe) Schmidt. He married Alvara Deppe on May 6, 1946, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Springbrook.

He was an Army veteran, having served during World War II.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Fr. Loosbrock Council 8269 Knights of Columbus, Maquoketa, where he served as the first Grand Knight. He also was a member of the Dubourg Assembly 1573 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 40/8, and a very active member of Timber City American Legion Post 75, O'Connor- Regenwether VFW Post 3633, Maquoketa, and the Andrew AMVETS Post 62.

John was an avid bowler on several teams.

Surviving are his wife, Alvara Schmidt, of Maquoketa; two daughters, Paulette (Mrs. Gary) Du Vall, of Hanover, Ind., and Annette (Mrs. Ed) Lechtenberg, of Maquoketa; five sons, Bob (Pam) Schmidt, of Dubuque, Dale (Judy) Schmidt, Dean (Barb) Schmidt and Virgil (Jody) Schmidt, all of Maquoketa, and Doug (Sandy) Schmidt, of Morris, Ill.; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; five sisters, Dorothy Zeimet, of Preston, Kathryn Groves, of Florida, Maryetta (Mrs. Larry) Lampe, of Bellevue, Patricia (Mrs. Verlyn "Jiggs") Trenkamp, of Omaha, Neb., and Charlene Grothues, of Kansas City, Kan.; nine brothers, Eddie (Marie) Schmidt and Gerald (Mary Ann) Schmidt, both of Preston, Ronald (Valeta) Schmidt, of Delmar, Leonard (Shirley) Schmidt, of Clackamas, Ore., Vincent (Anita) Schmidt, of Bellevue, Vitus (Darlis) Schmidt, of Omaha, Levi (Vera) Schmidt and David (Audrey) Schmidt, both of Maquoketa, and Tom (Lee) Schmidt, of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Noni Schmidt, of De Witt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Herbert, Harold and Julian; and two sisters, Marcella and Margaret.
