Ronald J. Schmidt
Ronald J. Schmidt, 90, of DeWitt, formerly of Delmar, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Westwing Place in DeWitt, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Delmar. The Rev. David Brownfield will be officiating.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Delmar. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Ronald John Schmidt was born in the summer of 1919, in rural Jackson County, Iowa, son of John and Katherine (Tebbe) Schmidt. He married Valeta Heiar in (10) February of 1943 in Bellevue, Iowa. They had five children.
He defined himself as a man who wasn't afraid of hard work. He toiled on several farms throughout Jackson and Clinton County, retiring in 1973. He also was a custodian of the Delwood Elementary School in Delmar for 13 years, and was with Clinton Engines in Maquoketa for 16 years.
He was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, Delmar.Ronnie prided himself in knowing the value of a dollar, wearing a suit to church every Sunday and helping his neighbors. His personal attributes included a remarkable memory and an avid conversationalist.
Ronald is survived by his children; Donald (and Rita) Schmidt of DeWitt, Margie (and Kirk) Scott-Craig of Davenport, Judy (and Wesley) Bare of Seattle, Washington, Linda (and Dave) Schachterle of Cedar Falls and Denise (and Steve) Twohig of Boise, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Zeimet, Kathryn Groves, Maryetta (and Larry) Lampe, Patricia (and Veryln) Trenkamp and Charlene Grothues; brothers, Gerald (and Mary Ann) Schmidt, Leonard (and Shirley) Schmidt, Vincent (and Anita) Schmidt, Vitis Schmidt, Levi (and Vera) Schmidt, David (and Audrey) Schmidt, and Thomas (Lee) Schmidt; sisters-in-law, Marie Schmidt and Alvara Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Valeta, his parents, brothers, Herbert, Harold, Julian, Edmund and John, sisters, Marcella and Margaret and sisters-in-law, Naomi Schmidt and Darlas Schmidt.
