Deceased Name: Herman Heiar

Herman Heiar, 98, of ManorCare Health Services, formerly of 20 Cambridge Court, died at 11:15 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at ManorCare.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1904, in La Motte, Iowa, son of John Peter and Anna Marie (Gross) Heiar. He married Pauline E. Heber on June 8, 1926, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque; she died on Jan. 31, 1994.

He farmed in the Dubuque area from 1932 until 1949. Herman then became a self-employed carpenter from 1950 until his retirement in 1957.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and past member of the Knights of Columbus. Hunting, fishing and gardening were some of Herman's favorite pastimes.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary E. Ryan, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Mary Ann (Frank) Sgroi, Kay (Gary) Henry, Jim (Lancey) Ryan, Linda (Steve) Knudson and Patty (Chuck) Cook; and four great-grandchildren. Michael Sgroi, Ryan and Chris Cook, and Matthew Knudson.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, James Ryan; three sons, Lyal Clemence Heiar, and two infant sons; his siblings, Anna, Margaretha, Kate, Peter, Nick, John, Mary and Clem.

A Herman Heiar Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Herman Heiar would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at ManorCare, especially Buffy, Jan and Tami.
