BELLEVUE, Iowa - Gary J. Michels, 48, of 209 N. 3rd St., Bellevue, died Thursday morning, June 19, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Kingery Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bellevue.

He was born on July 6, 1954, in Bellevue, son of Marvin and Rose Mary (Mootz) Michels.

He married Lori Budde on Oct. 30, 1976, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue. They owned and operated the Michels Convenience Store in Oxford Junction for six years before moving to Bellevue, where Gary was the district zone manager of circulation for the Des Moines Register Newspaper.

He also was a driver for the Bellevue Community School District and the girls' softball coach. He had been coach and organizer of youth baseball and softball leagues for many years. He was very active in all phases of sports for the Bellevue Community High School.

Surviving are his wife, Lori; a daughter, Trisha Michels, of Dubuque; two sons, Chad and Clint, and grandson, Austin, all at home; his parents, Marvin and Rosie Michels, of Bellevue; a sister, Karen (Mark) Jess, of Bellevue; four brothers, Darrell and Mark (Ann), both of Bellevue, Dennis (Robin), of St. Catherines, and Lynn (Marilyn), of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and his father-in-law, Eldred Budde.
