MAQUOKETA, Iowa - Madonna Delores Fogarty, 79, of Maquoketa, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The family has honored her request and the body will be cremated. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on May 6, 1924, in Elma, daughter of John D. and Mable (Griffin) Fogarty. She was the youngest of nine children.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Elma. She attended Mount Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids, received her bachelor of arts degree in education at Loras College in Dubuque, and her master's degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. She did post-graduate study at other colleges and universities.

Madonna taught for 45 years in Iowa and Montana, as well as serving as principal. For her last 19 years, she taught fifth grade in Maquoketa, at Youth Center and Cardinal Schools, retiring in 1989. She served one year as principal at Sacred Heart School in Maquoketa, from 1989 to 1990. She was very active in NEA, ISEA, and MEA.

Surviving are a brother, Edward Fogarty, of McPherson, Kan.; two sisters-in-law, Bernadette Fogarty, of Okeechobee, Fla., and Margaret Fogarty, of Naperville, Ill.; and nieces and nephews.
