Melvin A. Duhme, 82, of Otter Creek, Iowa, died on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, January 20, 2011, from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Melvin A. Duhme was born on November 4, 1928 in rural Fulton, Iowa, to Fred and Mary (Campbell) Duhme. He was educated in Jackson County country schools and then attended Maquoketa Community High School, graduating in 1945. He married Georgia Tegmeier, and later married Lois Jean Kyarsgaard on June 2, 1963 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Melvin was a lifelong farmer in the Otter Creek area, retiring in 2001.

Melvin enjoyed gardening, his dogs, bowling, deer hunting, softball, fishing and watching his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Melvin is survived by his wife Lois Jean Duhme of Maquoketa, IA; children, Dale Duhme of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Beverly) Duhme of Waterville, MN, Darlene (Steven) Luther of Waseca, MN, Dennis (Loly) Duhme of Maquoketa, IA, Michael Duhme of Zwingle, IA, and Janice Duhme of Maquoketa, IA; step-children, Gerald (Kelli) Duhme of Akron, OH, Shirley (Dale) Smith of Des Moines, IA, Larry (Linda) Duhme of Central City, IA, Richard (Carol) Duhme of Maquoketa, IA, and Cheryl (Brian) Nordyke of Altoona, IA; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and 12 step-grandchildren; brothers, Albert (Margaret) Duhme of Maquoketa, IA, and Chester (Yvonne) Duhme of Hardy, AR; sisters, Arlene Tegmeier of Morristown, MN, and Helen Spratt of Oelwein, IA; and a sister-in-law, Beulah Duhme of Marion, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Elmer, Raymond, Harold and Kenneth, a sister, Thelma, and a step-grandson.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Jackson County.
