Died.

STOUGHTON. – Sanford William Stoughton was born about six miles east of Maquoketa, Iowa, Feb. 7th, 1860, and died in the Sanatorium in Maquoketa, May 3rd, 1907, at the age of 47 years, 2 months, and 26 days. He grew to manhood and continuously resided in the community in which he was born. He was united in marriage to Miss Maggie DeGraw, April 3rd, 1884. To this union were born five children, three daughters and two sons, four of whom remain, one son having deceased in infancy. Since the death of his beloved wife, his eldest daughter, Esther, has very capably presided over his home. For seven or eight years he has been afflicted with the stubborn disease which successfully resisted the skill of the physicians and continued to subject him steadily to its paroxysms of pain and suffering, until his strength was finally exhausted and death came to his release. For the last five years he was unable to perform any active manual labor and suffered excruciating torment, notwithstanding he continued to give direction to his business affairs. There survive to mourn his loss from his doubly bereaved family, beside his four children, five brothers and three sisters, as follow: Miss Laura of Boise, Idaho; Mrs. W. E. Evans, of Maquoketa; Olin M. of Maquoketa; Otis H., of Dodge Center, Minn., Ira Q., George G., Cora E., and J. Harvey, at their home six miles east of Maquoketa. His father deceased May 12, 1901 and his sister Orpha, in the following autumn. Mr. Stoughton was a member of the Modern Brotherhood of America. On April 29 he received Christian baptism and united with the First Methodist Episcopal church of Maquoketa, as a probationary member. He said to his pastor, in the last conversation held with him, “It is all clear tonight.”

The funeral services were held in the First Methodist church, on Monday afternoon, May 6th, conducted by the pastor. The body was removed from the sanatorium to the home of his aunt. Mrs. S. T. Holmes, where it reposed until taken to the church. Mesdames F. H. Wilson and L. L. Lockard sang appropriately and comfortingly. Interment in the Union Center cemetery, near the old home.
