January 26, 1899Thomas Dow, one of this city’s respected citizens since 1872 and an honored veteran of the civil war, died at his home in this city Monday, January 23, of pneumonia. He was born in Perthshire, Scotland, Aug. 20, 1832. He came to America in 1849 at the age of 17 and lived with his father on a farm near Burrett, Winnebago Co., Ill., until the war broke out when he enlisted in September, 1861, and served his country faithfully until his health failed and was honorably discharged the fall of 1862. He was married to Katherine Brooking, Jan. 5, 1865, at Rockford, Ill. They came to Iowa in March of 1865 and lived on a farm near DeWitt until the spring of 1872 when they moved to Maquoketa where they have resided ever since. Besides a loving wife, four daughters are left to mourn their father Mrs. Hiram Follett, Mrs. Ed. Williams, Mata and Jessie. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church this afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by A. W. Drips Post, G. A. R., of which he was a member. The post and the W. R. C. attended in a body Rev. T. E. Fleming administered the last sad rites.
