January 16, 1917WM. D. Becker Is Suddenly Called by Death
The people of this city and community were shocked Saturday afternoon when the news of the death of William D. Becker became known, and for a time it was thought that some error had been made by those circulating the report, as Mr. Becker had been in apparent good health a few hours before death came, which was due to apoplexy.
He was at work about his home about eight miles north of this city when he was suddenly stricken, and before medical assistance could reach him he had passed away.
Mr. Becker was one of Jackson county’s successful farmers having some years ago purchased the M. King farm where by industry and thrift he had reached success. Until the past sixteen years, during which he had engaged in farming, he had spent much of his life in Maquoketa, here, with his late father, Jacob Becker, and brothers, being engaged in brick-making.
Deceased was born in Bellevue Nov. 18, 1863, coming with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Becker, to this city. He was united in marriage in 1875 to Miss Mary Beck, who with two sons and five daughters remain to mourn the loss of a loving husband and kind father.
He was an honored member of both the Masonic and Modern Woodmen orders, and was ever found loyal and true to his obligations as set forth by these great fraternities. A kind neighbor and friend has left the council chamber of his brother craftsmen, and as in his home, will his voice and helpful influence be sadly missed.
The children surviving are Dr. F. H. of West Union, Iowa. Will at home; Mrs. Eugene O’Neal of Andrew; Mrs. Paul Beck of near Maquoketa; Mrs. J. Smail of near Andrew and two daughters at home. Besides these are three brothers, Jake, Henry and George, all of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Adam Hess of Maquoketa.
The funeral was held from the late home on the farm this (Tuesday) forenoon at 11 o’clock, with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery the Masonic order conducting the committal service.
