Obituary.

Sappho Herrick Bartram was born in Fairfield township, Franklin county, Vermont. Oct. 18, 1824, being therefore 89 years, 6 months and 29 days old at the time of her death.

Dec. 18, 1842, she was united in marriage to Loren Atwood Leach, who preceded her in death, Mar. 30, 1884.

To this union were born three children, Nelson E., Charles A. and Helen S. Of these children only one, Charles A., are living, Helen dying in 1871, Nelson in 1909.

The deceased with her family came to Illinois in the spring of 1857, locating near Elgin and remaining there until May, 1865, at which time she came to Iowa, living on the farm near Delmar until 1887 when she with her son, Charles, came to Maquoketa to reside.

Nearly fifteen years ago she lost her sight and ten years ago last September she received a fall which incapacitated her from walking. Her patience has been marvelous.

Deprived of the use of her eyes, unable to walk, yet she never murmured or uttered a word of discontent.

How true it is “He whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.”

Mrs. Leach at an early age became a member of the Protestant Episcopal church and never for a moment did she waver from her allegiance. We think it can be truly said that all that could be done for her comfort and welfare was done gladly and cheerfully by her son and daughter, for truly the wife of the son was indeed a daughter.

A rare yet beautiful coincidence lies in the fact that Grandma Leach and her son Charles had never been separated; the same fireside had given comfort to both during the entire lifetime of this devoted mother and son.

Funeral services were held at the late home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Arthur M. Lewis officiating. Interment in Mt. Hope.
