Services Held Today For Byrd Crane

Byrd Crane, 77, dropped dead Monday evening shortly after 6 p.m. on Main Street. He had been in poor health for some time and was taken ill while eating his supper at a downtown café Monday. He left the restaurant and died a few moments later.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Buchner funeral chapel, with the Rev. C. E. Holyoke of the Reformed church officiating. Burial was made at Buckhorn cemetery, with Peerless Lodge No. 60, Knights of Pythias in charge of the committal service.

Stephen Byrd Crane was born in South Fork Township, near Maquoketa, April 18, 1867, the son of Isaiah and Margaret Crane. He had lived his entire life in this community and for many years was a partner in the draying firm of Harding and Crane.

April 18, 1928, he was married in Maquoketa to Katherine Hamley, who preceded him in death on April 22, 1941. For many years he has been an active member of the Knights of Pythias lodge.

His only survivor is one brother Edward Crane of Edgerton, Va., who was unable to attend the final rites here because of poor health.
