Mr. Joseph Jackson died at his home four miles north of Maquoketa on Sunday, March 31, 1907, of heart disease, aged 77 years, 4 months and 9 days.He was the third child of Joseph Jackson and Frances Maplethorpe Jackson, born in East Hoolten, Lincolnshire, England, November 22, 1829. He was one of a family of eight, four brothers and three sisters of whom three are living. Thomas Jackson and Mrs. Anna Shipinson of Hull, England and William Jackson of near Fulton, this county.
Joseph Jackson came to this country in 1853. He was married at Davenport, Iowa, to Miss Jane Petch in 1854, where they lived nine years, then they moved to Farmers Creek township, three miles north of Fulton, Iowa, where they lived twenty-one years. They then bought the Usher farm where he has since resided. His wife passed away March 24, 1893, at the advanced age of 75 years. Five children were born to them, two of whom survive him, Joseph Jackson, Jr., and Mrs. S. M. Shattuck, also five grand-children and one great grand-child.
Mr. Jackson was one of those sturdy old settlers, whose untiring industry and frugality, built up a fine estate and gained for him the highest esteem of neighbors and friends for his integrity and reliability.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 o’clock from the house with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Rector Jones of Lyons now in charge of St. Mark’s Church this city, officiated.
