Carl Muhlhousen was born Sept. 22, 1834, in Hessen, Nassau, Germany. He emigrated to Denmark in 1855, and in 1865 he was married to Elizabeth Bratthauer of Hessen, Nassau, Germany. To them were born seven children, three of whom died in infancy-Anna Anderson of Welton, John of Elwood, Mary Olmers of Lake Benton, Minnesota, Pete of Elwood, together with the bereft wife survive to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. He came to America and located at Clinton, Iowa in 1889. A year later he came to Jackson County, near Maquoketa and resided there until 1896, when he located near Elwood, where he resided with his family until his death, March 30, at 7:30 p.m., aged 72 years, 6 months and 8 days.
He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the German Reformed Church at the age of 14. In Denmark he united with the Lutheran Church and died in that faith, having received the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper by request on the same day as his death.
Funeral service at the home one and a half miles east of Elwood at 2 p.m. and at the Union Church at 3 p.m. Tuesday and burial in the cemetery by the church, Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
